This year the Learning & Technologies Team made available a selection of technology kits for schools to borrow. The kits included Spheros, Green Screens, Makey Makeys and Blue-bots. To say these kits have been popular is an understatement!

Thirty eight schools borrowed kits for their students to explore, create and collaborate with. We are very lucky to have some examples to share of how CESA teachers and students embraced and used these technology kits. A huge thankyou to St John Bosco School, St Partrick’s School and Our Lady of Grace School for sharing.

This year we have had a greater approach to STEM Education in many of our Inquiry Learning sessions at St Patrick’s Mansfield Park.  As part of our commitment to the Australian Curriculum we have taken a strong approach of integrating this area into our learning.

We commenced by introducing Blue Bots to demonstrate our understanding of algorithms and simple coding. We progressed with students using Spheros. The students were required to have an understanding of speed, direction, angles and distance in their block coding in order to get the Sphero to complete tasks such as following a designated path and navigating student constructed mazes.

The creativity and problem solving was further evidence of the students STEM learning. The students created maps, grids, mazes and continually problem solved and collaborated.

What we’ve really enjoyed about the kits are that as a small school, we don’t have the funding to buy everything that we would like to have at once.  Borrowing the kits enables our students to access a wide range of equipment to gain experience in a variety of technologies.  It enables us as educators to experiment with different equipment in order to determine what we would like to purchase for our school, and what we would prefer to continue to borrow.  Our learners have been so excited to try out the equipment, and tell me that they’re the luckiest kids in the world to get such fantastic access.
